You can still train hard. You just can't train stupid, and you can't skip the boring bits any more.
17 February 2026 · 5 MIN READThe lie is that you have to go easy after forty. You don't. Plenty of men set lifetime PRs in their fifties. What changes is the margin for error — you recover a bit slower, and the daft session costs you three weeks instead of three days.
Warm up properly. Not fifteen minutes of stretching, but enough ramping sets that your first working set isn't a shock. Five minutes buys you a lot.
Leave a rep or two in the tank on most sets. Grinding every set to failure feels productive and mostly just buries you. Save the true efforts for the last set of a big lift, and not every week.
Load your joints, don't just avoid them. Shoulders, knees and lower backs get worse when you train around them forever. Find the range and the variation that doesn't hurt, and build strength there.
And keep a log. If you can't tell me what you lifted a month ago, you can't tell whether you're progressing — and progress, not soreness, is the thing we're after.
Three sessions you actually do beat five you keep meaning to. Building a week that survives work, kids and a bad night's sleep.
MINDSET · 4 MIN READNobody gets in trouble for training too sensibly. They get in trouble for going too hard, too early, then stopping.
